Karma and Dharma

Karma and Dharma

Karma and Dharma is not a belief, but a fact of life, and if truly understood can change one’s life for the better. In retrospect, as a teenager I did not have much insight of what one should do in life. I was quite the book-smart youth in high school, but lacked in judgment. As a result of bad judgment and friends, I ended up not finishing high school. Consequently, I place myself in an unwanted part of society, by not finishing school; I brought bad karma and dharma upon myself.

However, it did not take me long to figure out that my then current place in life was not for me. So, I went back to school and retained a General Education Diploma (GED), and thereafter joined the Marine Corps. Those two seemingly small acts took my life in a completely different direction. Although, I now retain a college degree from Walden University, one could not begin to imagine the education I retained beforehand just from my travels in the service, and self-education. So, I contend, one holds his or her life in their own hands.

Social Responsibility

Furthermore, I would say that by understanding karma and dharma, more social responsibility can be inspired and/or reduction in conflicts reached, if used. Social responsibility can be inspired simply by showing and teaching this concept. For example, by pushing self responsibility and telling our own story of change to those who will listen. By letting the youths know that if they make a mistake they are not trapped in its bad karma and dharma. Our children can create their own circumstances by changing their mind-set. By so doing, they can bring good karma by making the right choices I life. Because by accepting a lesser position in life one accepts karma, and lives a dharma that is not set in stone. By choosing you own way of life, this “reverses the earlier flow from karma to dharma, into one from dharma to karma” (Sharma 2008, p. 1).

For instance, one can go back to school or better yet start his or her own business. We take for granted that the youths are totally aware of this fact. Also, this would reduce crime if done on a large scale, because those who are not truly criminals would wake-up. Thus, we will have less internal conflict in this nation. Over-stand that if the youths were truly thinking, they would not have give up their studies. Let us be their guiding light for the Nation. So too, always remember, education of self is the best education to start with.
